Costumes Notes

After making Kiki, I wanted to continue to make easy, comfortable costumes to wear on the Sundays and short days of conventions and bonus if I can add them to my normal wardrobe. The moment I saw TKG's artwork, I knew that this was the perfect dress to make and I needed it.

Pidge was one of my simple costumes, design wise. For the dress, I modified the bodice of a McCall's pattern to fit my tiny ribcage (shrinking it down by almost 4 inches), attaching it to a 3/4-circle skirt. Both are made with a lovely green sateen that happened to be part of the summer seasonal line at Fabricland.

The socks were a pair of white socks that I dyed to match the orange fabric I used for the tie. The tie was made with some of the leftover fabric from Pidgeot, and probably required the most planning and math of the entire costume to make sure that it fit nicely into the little fabric I had left.

The shoes were an old pair I owned that were given a new lease on life with a bit of black shoe polish and gold-painted foam attached with double-sided tape.

The belt was made with left-over pleather from something, sewn into a tube and attached to a belt-buckle-thing that would do up in the back. The gold-emblem on the front was originally made of gold-acrylic paint covered foam and attached with more double-sided tape. It was later remade with a worbla-foam sandwich for durability.

The blouse I pulled from my daily work wordrobe, the wig I bought at con and used my finger and a comb to style how I wanted it, and the two crinolines under the skirt I already owned from other costumes. The round glasses were initially borrowed off a friend (her Harry Potter glasses), but I later bought my own pair. The more square frames are my actual day-to-day glasses which I love being able to use for this costume.

  • The importance of mockups: almost 4" removed from the chest to make this fit
  • The end is in sight! (Also doubles as a casual Link with the right accesories.)
  • So close, yet so far.
  • A little polish goes a long way (in giving old shoes new life).
